<suppInfo>Engineered Floodplain: The floodplain is calculated by following standard methodologies for the determination of flood risk
areas, as outlined in provincial and federal floodplain modeling guidelines. The models use a
specified storm event centered over the watershed and account for watershed features such as soils
(type and degree of saturation), vegetation, grades, existing land uses. Water surface elevations have
been produced for most drainage areas greater than 125ha and where base mapping is considered
to have a high degree map accuracy (i.e., 1:2,000 scale).
Estimated Floodplain: Where the detailed extents of floodplains have not
been determined through standard floodplain modeling, the floodplain has been estimated on the
basis of a computer calculation using Ontario Base Map cross-sections (1:5000 / 10,000 scale).
Because of the base map scale and absence of surveyed cross-sections at river and stream
crossings, these floodplains do not have the same level of precision as the fully engineered floodplains. Culverts have not been included in the estimated hydraulic models.
Spill: Spills that have been included as/are considered part of the floodplain.
Spill-Undefined: Areas where loss of containment of the floodplain has been identified, and a spill is expected to occur. However, these spills have not been modelled and/or defined.
Semi-Engineered Floodplain: Where the detailed extents of floodplains have not
been determined through standard floodplain modeling, the floodplain has been estimated on the
basis of a computer calculation using Ontario Base Map cross-sections (1:5000 / 10,000 scale).
Because of the base map scale and absence of surveyed cross-sections at river and stream

<statement>The floodplain layer, whether it is derived from engineered or estimated models, is based on overall watershed models and is not detailed enough such that the flood line can be directly transposed onto a proposed development site. Proposed development that is affected by floodplain requires the floodplain on the site to be delineated based on the flood elevations calculated by the overall hydraulic model and detailed site specific survey information. In some cases the hydraulic model may need to be revised, updated or created.
